‘मानव कंप्यूटर’ के नाम से दुनिया भर में विख्यात Shakuntala devi ने गणित के क्षेत्र में क्रांति ला दी। इन्हें सबसे कठिन माने जाने वाले विषय को सबसे आसानी से हल करने में महारत हासिल थी। आमतौर पर माना जाता है कि गणित विषय लड़कियों के लिए नहीं है और इसी धारणा को शकुंतला देवी ने इस तरह चुनौती दी कि गणित के क्षेत्र में इनका नाम स्वर्णाक्षरों में दर्ज़ हो गया।
इन्होंने यह सिद्ध कर दिया कि गणित पर किसी विशेष जेंडर का कॉपीराइट नहीं है। बिना किसी औपचारिक शिक्षा के इन्होंने गणित पर ऐसे फॉर्मूले ईजाद किये, ऐसी तकनीकें विकसित की, जिसको समझने के लिए लोगों को शोध करना पड़ रहा है। शकुंतला देवी की असाधारण प्रतिभा को देखते हुए तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी ने इन्हें ‘मैथमेटिकल एम्बेसडर’ की उपाधि से अलंकृत किया था।
Shakuntala devi का आरंभिक जीवन-
Shakuntala devi का जन्म 4 नवंबर 1929 को बेंगलुरु, कर्नाटक में एक रूढ़िवादी कन्नड़ परिवार में हुआ था। इनकी माता का नाम सुंदरम्मा और पिता सीवी सुंदरराजा थे। इनका बचपन बेहद गरीबी और अभावों में बीता। पिता सुंदरराजा ने खानदानी परंपरा के तहत पुजारी बनने से इनकार कर दिया और सर्कस में कलाकार के तौर पर काम करने लगे। शकुंतला देवी बचपन से ही विलक्षण प्रतिभा की धनी थीं। उनकी स्मरण शक्ति इतनी अद्भुत थी कि एक बार जो देख लेतीं उन्हें हमेशा के लिए याद हो जाता।
जब Shakuntala devi 3 वर्ष की थी तो अपने पिता को ताश में हरा दिया था। इन्हें ताश के नियम नहीं पता थे, लेकिन वह बिजली की गति से नंबर्स को याद कर लेती थी और इस तरह अपने पिता को खेल में मात दे दी थी। इस घटना ने उनके पिता को आश्चर्यचकित कर दिया और उन्होंने कई बार और शकुंतला की परीक्षा ली और हर बार इन्होंने अपनी अद्भुत क्षमता का परिचय दिया। इसके बाद पिता ने बालिका शकुंतला को लेकर सार्वजनिक कार्यक्रम करना शुरू कर दिया।
महज 5 वर्ष की अवस्था में शकुंतला बड़ी से बड़ी संख्या का घनमूल, वर्गमूल और गणना पलक झपकते ही कर लिया करती थी। 6 वर्ष की उम्र में इन्हें मैसूर विश्वविद्यालय में अपनी गणितीय क्षमता का प्रदर्शन करने का मौका मिला। धीरे-धीरे इनकी प्रसिद्धि बढ़ती गई और 1944 में पिता के साथ लंदन जाने का मौका मिला जहां इन्हें गणित विषय पर किसी कार्यक्रम में प्रतिभाग करना था।
मानव कंप्यूटर के रूप में पहचान-
विदेश दौरा होने के बाद से शकुंतला देवी को देश-विदेश हर जगह से कार्यक्रम के लिए आमंत्रण आने लगे। जहां आम लोग ऐसी अद्भुत घटना का साक्षी होना चाहते थे, वहीं वैज्ञानिक, मनोवैज्ञानिक आदि इनके बारे में रिसर्च करना चाहते थे। Shakuntala devi ने 1950 में यूरोप का दौरा किया और वहां अपनी गणितीय क्षमता का प्रदर्शन किया। 1976 में इन्हें न्यूयॉर्क जाने का मौका मिला जहां इन्होंने कार्यक्रम किया।
1988 में एक बार संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के कार्यक्रम में मनोवैज्ञानिक जेनसन ने इन्हें देखा और इन पर काफी रिसर्च किया जो उन्होंने 1990 में ‘इंटेलिजेंस’ पत्रिका में प्रकाशित किया था। 1955 में बीबीसी के शो में शकुंतला को अतिथि के तौर पर बुलाया गया। वहां अंकगणित के जटिल सवाल का जवाब चुटकियों में देकर एक बार फिर से सुर्ख़ियों में आ गईं।
गिनीज बुक ऑफ़ वर्ल्ड रिकॉर्ड-
1977 में शकुंतला देवी को Southern Methodist University में 201 अंकों की संख्या का 23वां मूल कैलकुलेशन करने के लिए दिया गया। इन्होंने मात्र 50 सेकंड में इसका सही जवाब बता दिया और उस समय के सबसे तेज कंप्यूटर Univac को हरा दिया। यूनीवैक कंप्यूटर ने इस कैलकुलेशन में 62 सेकंड का समय लिया जो कि Shakuntala devi के द्वारा लिए गए समय से 12 सेकंड ज़्यादा था।
18 जून 1980 वह दिन था जब शकुंतला देवी ने 13 अंकों की दो संख्याओं का गुणनफल मात्र 28 सेकंड में करके इतिहास रच दिया। यह अभूतपूर्व कारनामा उन्होंने ‘इंपीरियल कॉलेज ऑफ़ लंदन’ में दिखाया था। इसी घटना के बाद 1982 में शकुंतला देवी का नाम ‘गिनीज बुक ऑफ वर्ल्ड रिकॉर्ड’ में दर्ज हो गया।
Shakuntala devi को प्राप्त पुरस्कार व सम्मान-
•5 अक्टूबर 1950 बीबीसी के लेस्ली मिशेल ने इन्हें ‘मानव कंप्यूटर’ कह कर संबोधित किया।
•1969 में फिलीपींस यूनिवर्सिटी द्वारा Distinguished woman of the year अवार्ड के साथ गोल्ड मेडल से सम्मानित किया गया।
•1982 ‘गिनीज बुक ऑफ़ वर्ल्ड रिकॉर्ड’ में नाम दर्ज़ हुआ।
•1988 में ‘रामानुजन मैथमेटिकल जीनियस’ अवार्ड मिला ।
•2013 में लाइफटाइम अचीवमेंट अवार्ड से सम्मानित किया गया।
•2013 में 4 नवंबर को उनके 84वें जन्मदिन पर गूगल ने डूडल बनाकर श्रद्धांजलि दी।
•31 जुलाई, 2020 को Shakuntala devi के जीवन पर बनी फ़िल्म रिलीज हुई, जिसमें मशहूर अभिनेत्री विद्या बालन ने शकुन्तला देवी का किरदार निभाया।
Shakuntala devi का व्यक्तिगत जीवन-
Shakuntala devi का जीवन पूरी तरह से गणित, ज्योतिष और लेखन को समर्पित रहा। हालांकि इन्होंने 1960 में आईएएस ऑफिसर परितोष बनर्जी से विवाह किया था परन्तु आपसी सामंजस्य से न होने से 1979 में दोनों अलग हो गए। कहा जाता है की परितोष बनर्जी का सेक्शुअल ओरियंटेशन सेम जेंडर के प्रति था इसलिए इन दोनों का वैवाहिक जीवन ज्यादा लंबा नहीं चल सका। इनकी एक बेटी थी अनुपमा, जिसके साथ शकुंतला देवी ने बेंगलुरु में अपने जीवन का बाकी वक़्त बिताया।
उस समय तक शकुंतला देवी देश विदेश में अपनी अलग पहचान बना चुकी थीं । बेंगलुरु में रहते हुए देश विदेश से तमाम सेलिब्रिटीज और राजनैतिक व्यक्ति इनसे ज्योतिष संबंधी परामर्श लेने आते थे। ऐसे में इनके राजनैतिक संबंध भी बने और एक बार इन्होंने इंदिरा गांधी के खिलाफ लोकसभा का (निर्दलीय) चुनाव लड़ा। हालांकि इन्हें इस चुनाव में हार का सामना करना पड़ा। आख़िरकार 21 अप्रैल 2013 को सांस और दिल की बीमारी की वजह से शकुंतला देवी इस दुनिया को हमेशा के लिए अलविदा कह गईं।

Shakuntala devi की पहचान भले ही गणित से हो परंतु लेखन के क्षेत्र में भी इनका योगदान अतुलनीय था। समलैंगिकता पर उस समय किताब लिखना अपने आप में एक क्रांतिकारी कदम था जब यह पूरी तरह से ग़ैरकानूनी था और इसे अनैतिक भी माना जाता था। उसे समय उनकी लिखी किताब The World of Homosexuals ने तहलका मचा दिया।
इसके अलावा शकुंतला देवी की लिखी किताबों Figuring the joy of numbers, Astrology for you, The perfect murder ने लेखन के क्षेत्र में अपनी दमदार उपस्थिति दर्ज़ की। इसके अलावा भी कई अन्य विषयों में इन्होंने अनेक महत्त्वपूर्ण लेख और किताबें लिखी हैं।
Shakuntala devi का जीवन उतार-चढ़ाव से भरा रहा। बेंगलुरु के एक साधारण परिवार में जन्मी शकुंतला का वैश्विक पटल पर अपनी स्वतंत्र पहचान बनाना वाकई काबिलेतारीफ़ और प्रेरणादायक है। इन्होंने विभिन्न वर्कशॉप्स, सेमिनार्स के माध्यम से गणित के प्रति जागरुकता और रुचि जगाने का प्रयास किया। अपनी असाधारण प्रतिभा से इन्होंने न सिर्फ़ विश्वभर में अपना और अपने परिवार का नाम रोशन किया बल्कि देश को भी गौरवान्वित होने का अवसर दिया।
